My work in sculptural form focuses on the characteristics of the clay. In my work I explore what the clay will do naturally on its’ own. I am fascinated with trying different clays, for I find that each has its’ own unique qualities that can be incorporated in the design and form. I work a lot with rolled out slabs of clay that I stretch, pull, twist and roll to create the form. I try to give my pieces expression, which sometimes results in a humanistic quality. Pieces are textured and finished with oxides, patinas, or wood-fired to enhance the surface qualities and allow the clay to show itself.
My experiences working in three-dimensional form is forever changing, and the ideas are never-ending and always one-of-a-kind. I’m continually finding surprises, making happy mistakes and learning about the endless possibilities. It is this love of the qualities of clay that keep me in appreciation and anticipation of what is next to discover.
