Kazutaka Uchida

Kazutaka Uchida
(1948 – 2024)

It is with deep sorrow that we honor the passing of Kazutaka Uchida, a visionary sculptor whose work has been an integral part of Freed Gallery since our opening in December 1994. Uchida was our very first featured artist, and his masterful stone sculptures remain a cherished presence in our space today.
Born in Toyota, Japan, Uchida’s artistic journey led him from Tama University of Fine Arts in Tokyo to the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, before returning to study environmental art with Isamu Noguchi. His monumental public sculptures earned numerous prestigious awards, including the Ube Open-Air Museum of Sculpture Prize and the Kobe City Park Association Prize, and displayed in esteemed collections worldwide, including the National Museum of Modern Art in Paris.
Beyond his remarkable artistic achievements, Uchida was a mentor and inspiration to sculptors across generations. His passion for stone carving and his commitment to pushing artistic boundaries left a lasting impression on those who had the privilege to know him. His influence reached far beyond his homeland, touching artists and collectors around the world.
Kazutaka Uchida’s legacy is etched not only in stone but in the hearts of those who admire his work. Freed Gallery is honored to have been part of his journey, and we will continue to celebrate his artistry for years to come.
